A Little About Us
What is Butternut Studios?
Butternut Studios isn’t a big company — it’s just the name we gave to our creative projects at home.
It’s made up of the two of us, Austin and McKiah Thomas, and started as a way to put our ideas under one banner.
We’re not an LLC or a big studio — just a married couple who love designing, testing, and creating things together.
What's with the name?
The name Butternut Studios comes from a silly nickname we call each other — “butternuts.” It started as a goofy, personal thing between us, and over time it stuck. When it came time to put a name on our little studio, nothing else felt right. Now it’s the banner for all of our creative projects.
Who works at Butternut Studios?
Role at Butternut Studios: Lead Designer & Developer
Day Job: Data Engineer at a manufacturing facility
At Butternut Studios: Austin is the mechanics brain behind Comet Chasers. He designed the rules, balanced the systems, and spent countless hours playtesting and refining until the game became fast, fun, and chaotic in just the right way. When he’s not deep in data at his day job, he’s pouring his free time into creating projects for Butternut Studios — with Comet Chasers being the first of many.
Fun Fact: Austin started Comet Chasers as a college project and refused to let it die after the semester ended.
Role at Butternut Studios: Creative Partner & Playtester Extraordinaire
Day Job: Behavior Technician at an Autism Center & Full-Time Psychology Student
At Butternut Studios: McKiah is the creative heart of Comet Chasers. She’s been there for every playtest, helping fine-tune the rules, balance the cards, and keep the game fun for everyone. She also brings in fresh ideas, and the kind of feedback that turned Comet Chasers from a rough prototype into a game ready for the table.
Fun Fact: Can beat Austin at his own game more often than he’d like to admit.
